They say that it's a good omen if the weather is like this at the start of the trip. And now I can say with certainty that this omen is true. Because our trip through the Altai Mountains was great on the whole.

- We have about 330 km to go... well, of course, we will be making stops.

Everything went great.

Аnd our small tour group of 12 people was very successful.

And the tour guide, Alexey, a philosophy candidate and history teacher at Barnaul University, turned out to be a real treasure trove of interesting information. And he also knows all the places along our route where you can eat deliciously and, most importantly, safely.

Sergey is a top-class driver. He steered our little four-wheeled ship with a sure hand.

And the first stop, unless you count the stops to eat and powder your nose, was at the chapel built on the site of the death of Mikhail Yevdokimov, who was known throughout the country at the time as both a talented artist and governor of the Altai region.

On August 7, 2005, Governor Evdokimov visited the village of Popkovnikovo to take part in the celebrations for the seventieth birthday of cosmonaut German Titov.

At this intersection, a Mercedes carrying the governor overtook a Toyota turning left at a very high speed - according to the results of the investigation, the speed was more than 150 km/h - and touched its rear wing, whereupon it lost control, left the road and crashed into a birch tree.

The speed was so high that the car flew 20 meters through the air before colliding with a birch tree!

After driving a little further on the Chuyiskiy highway, about 70 km, we made a stop in the village of Srostki. In this small Siberian village on the banks of the River Katun, a well-known and talented writer, director and actor was born into a simple peasant family: Vasily Makarovich Shukshin.

On Mount Piket, known for its picturesque view of the village, stands a profoundly moving monument in my view. Vasily Makarovich sat down on the mountain like a living person to admire the beauty of nature.

Interestingly, Gorno-Altaysk is not only the capital, but also the only city in the republic! Yes, yes... You have understood correctly... there are simply no other cities in the Altai Republic.

Gorno-Altaysk was established in 1824 by Russian settlers on the site where a small settlement of Teleuts, a small Turkic people, had previously existed. Initially, it bore the rather cheerful name of Ulala, derived from the river Ulalushka, near which it was formed.

The city of Gorno-Altaisk was officially designated with this name in 1948.

Unfortunately, we were unable to include Gorno-Altaisk in our itinerary. Due to the strict confines of the tour, there was no time allocated to explore the capital of the Altai Republic. In my opinion, this was an unfortunate oversight.

However, it would have been enchanting to leisurely wander the streets of this unique city. Moreover, exploring the renowned Anokhin National Museum would have been a fascinating adventure. Outside the Altai Republic, this museum is well-known for its possession of the famous mummy of Princess Ukoka, who has a remarkable age of over 2,000 years.
